Employer Provided Health Coverage
Some people have always carried individual health insurance policies for themselves and are somewhat experienced at shopping for cheap health insurance. Generally speaking, these people have jobs where they are not provided with health insurance, or they could simply be unemployed and in need of insurance.
There are also many individuals who have never had to worry about researching the purchase of a new medical coverage plan. These individuals have always had a job where the employer offered them medical coverage and paid the majority of the premium for their employees. These individuals have probably also been lucky with family health coverage plans, since may times when a company provides insurance for their workers they also offer a discounted rate for family plans. If this is your current situation, chances are you will not find health insurance coverage cheaper anywhere else.
Employers tend to offer two policy choices for their employees. The first is a HMO, Health Maintenance Organization, and the second is PPO, Preferred Provider Organization. There are other insurance option that may be available to employees but these are the most popular two offered by employers. The HMO is the least expensive plan, out of the two, but no matter what plan you have they will renew on a yearly basis. Upon renewal your employer may need to raise premium cost, or reduce coverage offered. In some cases you may even be covered by a new insurance company.
Since providing health coverage for their employees is a large expense, business tend to shop around each year and compare policies offered by other insurance companies. Often times the employers decide to reduce the amount that they are paying into their employees premiums, however others are try to keep the premiums the same by increasing deductible or out of pocket expenses for the insured.
Many companies today, especially many smaller ones, find they are no longer able to offer health insurance as a benefit to their employees. Our lawmakers are trying to persuade employers to continue offering health insurance by giving tax incentives to those who provide this assistance. The specific new laws governing this situation have not yet been passed, so it will remain to be seen what support our government will supply to small businesses in an effort to gain their backing for this plan.
