Benefits Of Study Abroad Programs & International Student Medical Insurance

A study abroad experience can be exciting and enriching. Discovering new cultures and seeing a different country is a great way to add to the study aboard educational experience. Be sure to consider international student insurance to protect against unexpected illness or injury before leaving for a study abroad program.

When traveling overseas, students may actually be at a higher risk for emergencies than when they are at home, increasing the need for international student insurance. Different climates, insects, and a lack of sanitation in some countries can make students more susceptible to illness or injury.

Most students and their parents don't understand that the insurance plan in their home country probably doesn't cover them when traveling abroad. A stressful situation that is a result of being injured or coming down with an illness in an unfamiliar environment can be scary when a student is overseas. You can save money and unnecessary stress if an emergency occurs by purchasing an international student health insurance plan.

A typical international student medical insurance plan covers emergency care for illness or injuries sustained while studying abroad. Often these plans offer coverage for hospital stays, outpatient care, prescriptions, and medically necessary treatments. Additionally, some plans include coverage for the costs related to returning from a trip early due to an evacuation or other emergency situation.

Remember to prepare for everything when preparing for a study abroad program, including important insurance and emergency contract information. The Center for Disease Control also recommends that all students bring a copy of their vaccination records, medical files and any medications needed prior to leaving the country.

In additional to purchasing study abroad insurance, students should also purchase a first aid kit for their trip that includes helpful items like hand sanitizer, bandages, and over-the-counter stomach remedies for unexpected non-emergency health issues.

The only way fully protect yourself when studying abroad is to purchase an international student insurance package. When a student is away from home, an illness or injury can be extremely stressful. Be prepared for anything by having insurance and you can relax in knowing that you will be protected in an emergency situation.

If you are planning to participate in a study abroad program, be sure to include purchasing international student health insurance in your plans. Doing so will allow you to relax and get the most out of your experience, without having to worry about the unexpected.
