Cheap Health Insurance - Look Before You Leap

As any educated consumer knows, you get what you pay for. Health insurance is no different. There are good policies, bad policies, and everything in between. Cheap health insurance, however, is something to think twice about before making any commitments.

Cheap insurance is priced that way because it's designed to give you very little back in return. One of the things to watch out for when you are researching some low cost health insurance policies is their rating. A low rating of C- or lower means there are questions as to whether the company could stay in business if it needed to pay out too many claims all at once. Many insurance companies over the years have gone out of business due the number of claims.

Another reason the premiums might be really low is that the doctors associated with the plan are being paid below industry rates. Or their deductibles are so high that they are useless.

All insurance companies need to manage their risk level. They are in business to make money; paying claims is something they do because they are obligated to but they want to do everything they can to deny claims. Cheap insurance companies have become experts in finding ways not to pay claims. They may not be able to.

Many of the doctors who choose to contract with these companies actually need the business. There are reasons why doctors are willing to take such low reimbursements and it's usually because they are not board certified, and perhaps they haven't even graduated from a U. S. Based medical school. There have even been reports where doctors who have lost their licenses are found working with some of these questionable insurance companies.

Since the deductibles for this type of low cost insurance are very high on average, this is not the kind of insurance to get if you and your family make frequent doctor appointments.
